I took a psychology class in high school. We learned about Id and Ego and Super Ego. Id is instant gratification. Id wants a candy bar. Ego holds us back until we pay for the candy bar so we don't get arrested. Super Ego tries to talk us out of the candy bar because it's bad for us.
